Learn More About Dyson Vacuum Inventor, James Dyson: How He Became The Father Of The Modern Vacuum 2022

James Dyson was born in 1947 in Norfolk, England. He competed in long distance running while in school. Dyson attributes this early activity to his appreciation of determination and tenacity.

After graduating Gresham’s School he went to the Byam Shaw School of Art. He stayed at Byam’s for one year and then moved on to Royal College of Art.

While at the Royal College of Art, Dyson studied furniture design, interior design and also engineering. It was here where Dyson laid the foundation for the talents and skills that he would use later on in life designing the world-renowned Dyson vacuums.

While at the Royal College of Art, Dyson created two inventions that displayed his developing skill. The first was the BallBarrow. It was a wheelbarrow that used a ball instead of the typical wheel. This design feature was to later show up in his signature vacuum. The second was a Sea Truck. This was a boat capable of landing on shore regardless of the environment.

Dyson graduated and began work as an art teacher. During this time he began to design a new and improved vacuum. Dyson was frustrated with the problem he saw with the commercial vacuums he was using. In particular, he was frustrated with the Hoover vacuums having continual clogging problems. Dyson decided upon using a cyclonic separation design for his vacuums.

Dyson spent the next few years designing a vacuum that was called the G-Force. Dyson had trouble finding a company that would sell and market the vacuum for him. What Dyson decided to do was to market the vacuum through catalog sales in Japan.

With the success he had with his first model, Dyson opened up a factory and continued making improvements. In 1993 Dyson opened up the research facility in Wiltshire. This also doubled as a production center. Dyson engineers improved upon the original design by creating a smaller interior model. This created a higher centrifugal force.

Even though he had created the most effective and popular vacuum on the market, Dyson was not satisfied. His vacuum design had won countless awards, yet he still kept making improvements.

Dyson integrated the ball technology that he had used in prior inventions. This ball technology proved so popular that the resulting vacuum became the most prestigious and award wining vacuums to come along in years.

James Dyson continues to expand his work to other areas of technological innovation. He has made dramatic improvements to other household items such as washing machines. Dyson is also continuing his research and development into the future of vacuum cleaning technology.

James Dyson has rightly been called the father of the modern vacuum. His innovative bagless designs, as well as the unique cyclonic force design, are both key aspects of the new and improved vacuum that people see on the market today. The innovation that has been a constant throughout Dyson’s career continues to produce results. Dyson has also created a foundation that supports the study of engineering and design.
